Log in to ARES Database.

You do not need to be a member of ARES to register. Please fill in all tabs.

The purpose of the ARES Registration Database is to provide a means of collecting information from ARES members (and potential members) that is often needed by Resource Managers and Emergency Coordinators. Accurate information is essential to assembling resources for emergencies and other events supported by ARES. Your willingness to volunteer communications support during emergencies and also as a community service is commendable. Taking the time to complete the registration will insure that ARES Staff members can assemble response teams with skills and equipment that best fit the current needs.

Welcome to the  Brown County ARES/RACES Site. ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) and RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services) are nationally two separate organizations, however, in the State of Wisconsin, they operate together transparently under the direction of Wisconsin ARES/RACES group. Emergencies can include floods, tornadoes, winter and summer storms, airplane crashes, large scale fires, pandemic outbreaks or any thing that might disrupt or strain normal communications for hospitals, government agencies and private disaster response organizations.

Brown County ARES/RACES is an organization of ham radio operators who volunteer their expertise, time and resources to provide primary and supplemental communications to government agencies, private disaster response organizations and other nonprofit organizations of Brown County, Wisconsin as well as providing support to ARES/RACES organizations in surrounding counties.

When the National Weather Service issues a "severe weather watch for Brown County", a "Severe Weather Net" of trained observers is activated on 147.120+ 107.2 pl . These reports are then passed by the Net Control Operator to the NWS liason on 444.775+ 107.2 pl reporting directly to the NWS where hams operate a communications console. The trained observers often drive out into the area of the storm in order to give actual sightings and verify the existence of ground touching tornados.

A Severe Weather Net operates as a direct reporting agency of real-time live observation of severe weather activity or severe weather potential through direct radio communications with the local office of the National Weather Service. We work very closely with the County Emergency Management Department. Besides serving as the backup communications for any outages, weather events are most prevalent.

All these observations are communicated to the National Weather Service to provide you with early warning. In Wisconsin, the majority of ARES members are trained SkyWarn storm spotters. With SkyWarn, the training consists of learning to "read" the sky. This session by the National Weather Service, covers the latest in the methods of determining what type of storm is observed. Items such as "wall clouds, wind shear, down drafts, anvil top clouds and tornados". Often times, an ARES SkyWarn net will transform into a damage assessment and relief coordination network for the emergency government immediately after damaging severe weather passes through.

REMEMBER.... When there is severe weather in and around NORTHEAST WISCONSIN THE NWS/SKYWARN MORE THAN LIKELY WILL BE USING THE 444.775 REPEATER! PLEASE MONITOR BEFORE USING ECHOLINK AND ALWAYS IDENTIFY WITH YOUR CALLSIGN BEFORE ACTIVATING ECHOLINK.

Disaster Communications classes and drills are held several times every year to insure that hams are all passing communications the same way to avoid confusion and to increase the proficiency and exactness of the data communicated. There is more training available through the A.R.R.L., FEMA and our own talented members.
